What's On: Goodnight Mr Tom at Theatre Royal Brighton

14 February 2013

What’s On: Goodnight Mr Tom @ Theatre Royal Brighton, Tues 19 – Sat 23 February 2013

Elizabeth Hughes previews a play based on a much loved children’s book.

The wonderfully uplifting tale Goodnight Mr Tom begins a week long run at Theatre Royal Brighton from Tuesday 19 – Saturday 23 February.

Set during the dark and dangerous build up to the Second World War, Goodnight Mr Tom follows a sad young boy, William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and builds a remarkable and moving friendship with the elderly recluse Tom Oakley. All seems perfect until William is devastatingly summoned back to London by his mother.

Michelle Magorian’s first novel is now 30 years old and has become a modern classic, it has been adapted for stage by David Wood and stars Olivier Award-winning actor Oliver Ford Davies as Mister Tom.

Author and actress, Magorian was inspired to write Goodnight Mr Tom after hearing her mother’s tales about her time as a nurse in the war.  Published in 1981, it has been translated into 11 languages and won awards in the UK, America and Australia.

The book won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize in 1982 and was commended for the Carnegie Medal. Now a world-wide literary favourite and BAFTA award-winning TV film (starring John Thaw), it continues to inspire audiences and bring generations together.

This Chichester Festival Theatre production boasts a host of British talent; Oliver Ford Davies is one of the UK’s best known and most highly respected actors he has appeared in three of the Star Wars films and played the role of Maester Cressen in the award winning HBO series Game of Thrones.

David Wood OBE, who adapted the book for stage, is the country’s leading writer and director of plays and musicals for children.  His other productions in the past six months include his Olivier nominated production of The Tiger Who Came For Tea (which played the West End before going on tour), James and the Giant Peach  and Tom’s Midnight Garden.
